How Vietnamese names work (quick guide)

Vietnamese names usually follow Family → Middle → Given order.

  • Family names: common ones include Nguyễn, Trần, Lê, Phạm, Hoàng/Huỳnh, Phan, Vũ/Võ, Đặng, Bùi, Đỗ, Dương, Trương.
  • Middle names add meaning and rhythm. Traditional markers include Văn (often masculine) and Thị (often feminine), but modern middles vary: Ngọc, Thanh, Quang, Minh, Khánh, Phương, Hữu, Đức.
  • Given names can be one or two words: Minh, Lan, Huy, Vy, Ngọc Ánh, Minh Anh, Gia Huy, Khánh Linh. Our generator mixes both for natural variety.

We preserve diacritics (ă â ê ô ơ ư, đ, tone marks) so names look and read like real Vietnamese. If your theme font struggles, you can strip diacritics in CSS or preprocessing—but keeping them protects meaning and pronunciation.

What you’ll get each click

  • Six names in the correct order, e.g., Nguyễn Văn Minh, Trần Thị Lan, Phạm Ngọc Ánh, Lê Minh Anh, Hoàng Gia Huy, Vũ Khánh Linh.
  • Both classic and modern cadences, mixing reliable family names with middles and givens used across the country.
  • Compact options too: about 30% of the dataset are short 2–8 letter names like An, Vy, Linh, Huy, Lan, Mai—great for display-limited UIs.

Tips for picking names readers love

  1. Say it aloud. Vietnamese names have a musical rhythm; choose the one that flows in your scene.
  2. Match tone to role.
    • Scholarly / calm: Minh, Hiếu, An, Hòa.
    • Elegant / poetic: Ngọc Ánh, Hồng Nhung, Quỳnh Anh.
    • Strong / dynamic: Gia Huy, Đức Thắng, Khánh Duy.
  3. Reuse family lines. Keep siblings under one family name; vary middles/givens: Nguyễn Văn Minh, Nguyễn Quang Huy, Nguyễn Ngọc Ánh.
  4. Use two-word givens for standout leads. Names like Minh Anh or Khánh Linh feel modern on the page.

Formatting & transliteration

  • Order matters. Present as Family Middle Given (e.g., Phan Thanh Huyền). For Western contexts, you can invert to Given Middle Family if needed; keep it consistent.
  • Diacritics matter. Hoang is not Hoàng; Nguyen is not Nguyễn. Our output keeps proper marks for clarity and respect.
  • Copy-paste safe. Everything uses UTF-8.
