DnD Subclass Name Generator

[author]

Subclass names carry a lot of weight. “Oath of the Radiant Crown” feels very different from “Pact of the Umbral Serpent” or “Circle of the Ember Bloom.” A good title tells players what this subclass is about before they ever read a feature.

The DnD Subclass Name Generator is built to give you strong, thematic titles for homebrew subclasses, reskins, and variant archetypes. Use it when you need a name for a new domain, circle, oath, path, pact, or archetype and you don’t want to stare at a blank page.

What Makes a Great DnD Subclass Name?

A good subclass name should:

  • Point to a theme (light, shadow, storm, nature, death, stars, etc.)
  • Suggest the playstyle or flavor (aggressive, defensive, sneaky, divine, arcane)
  • Be clear enough that players can remember and say it at the table

Most subclass names follow simple patterns you’ll see in this generator:

  • “Oath of the [Adjective] [Noun]”
    • Oath of the Radiant Crown, Oath of the Shattered Sun
  • “Circle of the [Noun]”
    • Circle of the Ember Bloom, Circle of the Frozen Wilds
  • “Path of the [Adjective] [Noun]”
    • Path of the Stormbound Wolf, Path of the Whispering Gale
  • “[Adjective] [Noun] Domain / Archetype / Tradition”
    • Veiled Thorn Doctrine, Sacred Flame Archetype, Starbound Oracle Tradition

This generator leans heavily on:

  • Elements: Flame, Frost, Storm, Tide, Void, Sun, Moon, Star
  • Symbols and items: Crown, Thorn, Shield, Blade, Mask, Banner
  • Creatures: Wolf, Raven, Phoenix, Dragon, Serpent, Lion, Stag, Fox
  • Abstract ideas: Dream, Nightmare, Oath, Vow, Hunt, Soul, Spirit

You mix these into structures that already feel “official,” so your homebrew fits beside published subclasses.

How to Use the DnD Subclass Name Generator

You can use this generator during subclass design, character creation, or when reskinning existing options.

On this page:

  1. Scroll to the DnD Subclass Name Generator section.
  2. Click “Generate DnD Subclass Names”. Six subclass titles appear in the grid.
  3. If none fit, click again. Each click pulls six new names from the 100,000-name dataset.
  4. When you see a name you like, click that card. The name copies to your clipboard, and the button briefly shows “Copied!”.
  5. Paste it into your document, homebrew page, character sheet, or notes.

Some ways to use it:

  • New homebrew subclasses
    • Pick a name that matches the mechanics you have in mind. For example, if your paladin smites with sunlight, “Oath of the Radiant Crown” or “Oath of the Sunlit Blade” will fit naturally.
  • Reskinning official options
    • Rename an existing subclass to match your setting. “Circle of the Shepherd” could become “Circle of the Verdant Hunt” with no rules change.
  • Group names and orders
    • Use the same style name for a whole order, not just one character. If you pick “Order of the Obsidian Raven,” that might be a full knightly or assassin order in your world.

If you like one name but want to nudge it, you can swap one word:

  • Oath of the Radiant Crown → Oath of the Radiant Sun
  • Circle of the Ember Bloom → Circle of the Ember Thorn
  • Path of the Stormbound Wolf → Path of the Stormbound Stag

The generator gives you the structure and flavor; you can fine-tune the details.
