What Makes a Great DnD Province Name?

A strong province name should tell you three main things:

  • Where it is (roughly)
  • What it looks like / feels like
  • How official or wild it is

This generator builds each name from:

  1. An adjective → tone and flavor
  2. A landform / region noun → geography
  3. An optional political suffix → government style

1. Adjectives: tone + color + mood

Adjectives cover a wide spread across the alphabet and give you instant mood:

You can change the feel of the same region by tweaking only the adjective.

2. Landform roots: geography in one word

Next, landform roots describe the terrain:

Finally, many names end in a political or administrative suffix:

  • More “state” / bureaucracy: Prefecture, Protectorate, Canton, Electorate, Quarter, Expanse

These set expectations for how the place is ruled:

  • Azure Isles Canton – smaller self-governing unit within a larger state

You can use the style of provinces to say something about the bigger world:

  • Patchwork feudal kingdom → lots of counties, shires, baronies
