What Makes a Great DnD Enemy Name?

  • Clear silhouette. The name should imply role or threat: brute, assassin, zealot, commander.
Examples: SkullBreaker, NightFang, IronCleaver, ShadowBlade, RuinBane.
  • Strong phonetics. Use hard consonants and long vowels for menace that’s still pronounceable.
Examples: Grakoth, Vordrak, Karsun, Zharis, Tharek.
  • Instant tone. Add an epithet that signals how they fight or what they believe.
Examples: BloodFang (savage), StormBreaker (military), BoneCleaver (grim), DarkBane (anti-heroic cult slayer).
  • Reusable patterns. Keep a short tag for initiative and a full title for reveals.
Examples: “Gruk” (DM notes) → Grukar IronBlade (scene intro).
  • Faction-friendly. Reuse epithet families to brand lieutenants and troops: Skull–, Iron–, Night–, Shadow–, Ruin–.

Quick DM tips

  • Use short tags (2–8 letters) on tokens and in combat logs.
  • Let the epithet guide gear and tactics: StormBlade uses reach weapons and thunder motifs; RuinBane hunts mages and idols.
  • Mirror the name in lore: wanted posters, cult scripts, war banners.
  • Keep pronunciation easy—your voice will thank you during long boss monologues.
